Spring
by
Gary Wakenhut

Spring came to meet me this morning.  I didn't recognize her at the time.  It was long before her early morning light had arrived, and I felt her presence tight within my chest.

Somewhere between being in and out of sleep, I discovered some resolution as a softness began to occur from inside my chest.  Soon, I felt the essence of warmth from my being available to all that were within my thoughts.

As my awareness moved from internal to external, I found the dampness of the outside air as it moved through the window and across my face.  It touched my nose with the freshness of spring.

I could also see the gentleness of this air lightly touching the delicate tamarack outside the window but bypassing the heavier red pine.

Delicate pear blossoms washed by the spring rain

I knew it had rained during the night, a needed rain as there had been none since growth had started last month.  I had been awakened several times by God's thunder and lightning spreading the element of nitrogen through the air, but I was unaware of what it had stimulated until I walked to the opened bedroom door that connects us to the outside.

My eyes were immediately drawn to the extremely heavy beauty of the flowering crab, so laden with its vital crimson blossoms, its limbs were sure to break.  Its beauty was framed by dark moisture consuming clouds moving gently behind it without a sound.

Drawn further to the blossoming trees, I found so much passing all at the same time.  The plums still had a few petals left of their beauty, and the pears were at their peak, the blossoms appropriately surrounded by their freshly grown lime green leaves.

The view from our bedroom

Just coming into their prime were the pink shades of the apple blossom.  What an adventure to see so much all at the same time.

And somewhere off in the background were the robins and cardinals along with other songs I did not recognize.  Of course, the sentry goose standing guard for his friends on the lake was also heralding the arrival of this day.

What does one do with the beauty of such an experience?  Why you have it for breakfast and enjoy each delicious bite before the flavor fades into the tasks of the day.

Notes about the creation of
Spring
from
Gary

I have always been a very assertive person, feeling that I was pretty much in charge of my destiny.  However, lack of appropriate insight and some poor decisions in the late 90's, placed others in charge of my future.  This was a very humbling experience, and the extended anxiety created by being unable to direct my future, became an unexpected fertile garden for my growth.

Most important for me was the creativity that emerged during this period.  I would often be awakened in the early hours prior to dawn by the fears that accompanied this unknown future.  From this depth, meaningful words would begin to occur.  These inspirations would move me from my bed to the computer. Sitting at the keyboard wrapped in the warmth of my bathrobe, I would be utterly amazed by the emergence of creative expression flowing from within these fertile voids.

Spring was one of these creations.  Later, when we decided to record Meditative Readings CD, we knew Spring had to be included.  This past March, I decided to re-master the original recording for this email audio greeting card. I was unaware of the creative potential that would once again emerge from this piece.

Of course, the word "spring" can be discovered in many other contexts.  One of my favorites often comes forth in my meditations when exploring the creative process.  It describes the process of water flowing freely from within the earth.

We have many such places in our swamp where this phenomenon occurs.  From within its depths, the crystal clearness of water emerges in the present, edged by the decay of the the past, and feeding the new growth of the future.

We trust this metaphor will serve to open your creative doors for living as you move into and through this wonderful season of Spring.

Anne's harp and keyboard skills are an important feature of this email audio greeting card.  When we record readings such as this, Anne plays as I read.  This allows us to creatively interact and pace our efforts with each other.  This approach allows us to be inspired by each other's expressions. More of our readings are available on the Meditative Readings CD
